Leg Cramps
Leg cramps or night leg cramps mostly calf – muscle are cramps are sudden and painful involuntary contraction of leg muscles. The duration of cramps are usually less than a minute i.e some seconds. Only a few cramps lasts for minutes and maximum of 10 minutes. However some times the pain is so severe that it lasts for 24 hours.
Causes Of Leg Cramps :
Causes of leg cramps are still unknown however they are harmless but causes lots of pain. Leg cramps happens because of prolonged period of contraction and still our brain gives order to contract results in cramp. Thats the major reason why cramps happens mostly at sleep. So the posture of sleeping matters most. This is the most acceptable theory on leg cramps.
On the other hand there are more of secondary reasons that causes leg cramps
Exercises are one the major reason. As during exercise if a muscle is under stress for a long period it will lead to cramp. Thats one the reason why atheletes are more prone to leg cramps. Excessive use and try to contract during sports will lead to muscle cramps.
Another causes of leg cramps are excessive loss of salts from the body . It happens when athletes perform during hot conditions. Ecessive sweat leads to loss of more salts from the body thats why its strictly advisable to hydrate regularly.
Some other secondary causes may be
- Dehydration
- Diarrhea
- Electrolyte imbalance
- flatfeet
- Alcoholism or alcohol abus
- Kidney failure, chronic
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Gastric bypass surgery
- Dehydration
- Lead poisoning
- Diuretics
Diagnosis :
Diagnosis of leg cramps should be easily done by the General Practitioner. Site of pain, severity, time duration, how and when it occurs will gives proper diagnosis.
Treatment :
Mostly in not any underlaying cause will treat you without any further time or complications
Stretching Exercises :
- walk on tiptoes for a couple of minutes.
- Fix the leg and curve the lower leg in reverse, in this way extending the calf muscle.
- Remain around one meter from a divider with your feet level on the ground. Lean forward against the divider with your arms outstretched, however don’t lift your heels (keep your heels on the ground). Remain like that for around ten seconds and gently come back to an upright position. Repeat around 5 to 10 times.
Painkillers :
Tablets are not so advisable as they take time to do their work and pain will be gone on his own till they starts to work, But still painkiller sprays are more advisable and effective in leg cramps.
